Group 3's presentation summary
Group 1 presentation on intercultural communication was very interesting and gave me a lot of information about topics I was unfamiliar with. I agree with the fact that communication and interpersonal relationships are influenced by certain cultures which is how we can learn about other customs and ways of living. It shows us as members of society that communication can show us other values and beliefs, body language, and rituals. I’ve experienced this in the way that my friends from different countries or states do things differently than in my family. The section on culture shock stood out to me I never realized there was stages to experiencing a culture shock but while seeing this section I noticed I too have experienced all these stages when I have traveled outside the US, like when I went to Cuba my home country for the first time in years since the pandemic I experience the honeymoon, negotiation, adjustment, and adaptation stage. The slide on Dominant culture and Co-Cultures was interesting to me because I wasn’t aware of these two different topics. Since I live in Miami, I have not experienced much of the dominant culture because there is so many different cultures living together, and each culture has their own ways I think we fall more towards the Co-culture side. I also agree with the topic about ethnicity I have noticed many people choose to live near others from their hometown due to familiarity. The video that was added to the end of the presentation summarized the topic and gave me a better idea on how intercultural communications works, living in such a diverse city is it important to have knowledge on these topics. This presentation was very well made and gave me a lot of information I will be using in the future.
The presentation Group 2 gave was also great. It was very interesting learning about communicating in groups. The section on Family communication pattern theories was interesting because I never heard about these different types of patterns in families dynamics, the video was also an entertaining yet to the point helping explain how a family’s communication pattern works and it was funny as well. Learning about virtual groups was helpful since we live in a very technology heavy society and most of us have experienced having to meet in a virtual setting in one point of our lives, like in this class SPC1017 we meet online via zoom, so it is good to know about the different ways to communicate virtually. The slides on characteristics of healthy groups were great it gave me a lot of eye-opening information on this topic the section where healthy groups having ethical goals was talked about gave interesting information since there are many unethical groups in this world it is good to notice that even though they can be effective they aren’t the healthiest group dynamics, majority of these types of unethical groups end up going through hardships and problems thorough their time together as a group. I agree with the part on how healthy groups are interdependent, groups have different types of people with different skills it is important to use other group members skills and knowledge to accomplish certain goal. Observing an orchestra was a great example to further explain how interdependent groups work, all the different instruments come together to give a great sounding performance. Learning about the different stages of group development was informative. I agreed with the fact that during the forming stage in a group it is important that group members maintain a positive attitude and avoid conflict since it is the beginning of a group it best to have open ears for all fellow members. The breakfast club example was a great way to explain this since the members of the club where all so different, yet they all came together to become great friends due to their shared experiences. Conflicts in a group is an important topic. Gaining knowledge on the pseudo conflict was interesting since I have never heard of this term before, but I have noticed in past group settings that there is a good probability for conflict due to poor communication. This group did an excellent job in explaining these topics, the examples provided where great ways to show how these topics work.
In group 3 we all did a great job putting together this presentation. I learned a lot about leadership and problem solving in a group while participating in this presentation. Having a good leader is essential to the success of a group since they play a significant role in leading, inspiring, trusting other group members and listening to what all members have to say. I agreed with the section on how people prefer informal leaders instead of formal leaders. It is important to understand the task leaders have in order to accomplish goals within a group. Knowing that your leader will listen and give you opportunities to give your input on certain topics is a great thing to have in a successful group setting. The video example we put in our presentation was a great way to show excellent leader qualities. Learning the steps for problem solving in a team was interesting. It is important to use these steps for finding a solution to the problem at hand. Identifying, analyzing, determining, and generating different solutions are all great ways to solve a problem a group might face. Knowing about the different guidelines and formats of a meeting is also important. Oral, written and virtual formats are all different ways a group can communicate a problem. Understanding the guidelines before, during and after a meeting is also essential to have an easy communication process, asking questions and taking notes and reviewing outcomes will ensure that everyone has a good understanding about the problem at hand so everyone can help find a solution. The slides on group dynamics and presentation were great. It is important for group members to work together to discover any problems and find appropriate ways to solve it. Our group did a great job working together to make this presentation happen we all did our parts and communicated effectively to make sure we didn’t have difficulties. I enjoyed working with this group and had a great time gaining knowledge on all the presentations the class showed.
